WHAT ARE MECHANICAL SWITCHES AND WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT?


Underneath each key of a mechanical keyboard is a mechanism called a switch. These switches have a variety of response, noise, and travel times, which make them attractive to gamers and heavy typists.

When pressing a key, you get instant tactile feedback. This makes typing easier on the fingers. You also get audio feedback, that unique clicky sound, the sound of a traditional keyboard. The feedback helps you recognize a keypress, and it can help improve your productivity as well as your speed when using a keyboard.

Mechanical switches are becoming a standard; but there’s an issue, once you buy your keyboard, you are stuck with the switches until you buy a new one.


That’s not a problem anymore. All our switches are hot-swappable, so you can easily pull them out and replace them with others whenever you want.



IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN CHOOSING YOUR SWITCHES

There are three things to consider when choosing your switches:

The auditory feedback, with or without a clicky sound.

The tactile feedback, a smooth or clicky key press.

The force needed to activate the switch.


The auditory feedback is related to the ‘click’ sound when you press your key. The switches that have sound are called Clicky. When we talk about the tactile feedback, we refer to the feeling of the key press.

You can have a smooth typing feel or have a slight “bump” when the key is actuated. The switches without that “bump” are called Linear and the ones with the “bump” are called Tactile. All the Clicky switches are also Tactile.


The force needed to activate the switch is usually measured in grams of pressure.The ones with less pressure will be the ones that will be faster to activate. You can consider a pressure lesser or equal to 50 cN as light, and the others as medium. Raise does not include switches with high-pressure force.
